Plasma Light Bulb…

Luxim labs recently unveiled an incredibly energy efficient light bulb that packs more luminosity than a street lamp into a pill-sized form factor. Each bulb is filled with argon gas, which turns to plasma when electricity is focused through it. The energy is driven to the bulb without electrodes. The resulting light is intensely bright and mirrors the quality of light radiated by the sun, yet is produced by one of the smallest, most energy efficient light sources..

Voiceless Communication…

A neckband that translates thought into speech by picking up nerve signals has been used to demonstrate the first voiceless phone call.
With careful training a person can send nerve signals to their vocal cords without making a sound. These signals are picked up by the neckband and relayed wirelessly to a computer that converts them into words spoken by a computerised voice.

Robots: BigDog…

The Most Advanced Quadruped Robot on Earth, BigDog is the alpha male of the Boston Dynamics family of robots. It is a quadruped robot that walks, runs, and climbs on rough terrain and carries heavy loads. BigDog is powered by a gasoline engine that drives a hydraulic actuation system. BigDog’s legs are articulated like an animal’s, and have compliant elements that absorb shock and recycle energy from one step to the next. BigDog is the size of a large dog or small mule, measuring 1 meter long, 0.7 meters tall and 75 kg weight..

UK Electric Car with Style…

In June 2007, The Lightning Car Company announced its intent to develop electric technology for a luxury British sports car – the Lightning GT. This car, to get where it needs to go, uses “electronically controlled traction control which negates wheel spin and unbalance in the power being applied.” Because there is no engine, the Lightning has a maintenance-free motor with just a few parts and together with the control electronics and special batteries, will not need anywhere near the servicing of other sports cars. The Lightning GT reportedly does 0-60 in four seconds and has 700+ rated bhp..

IBM releases new Mainframe…

The new System called the z10, with a starting price at about $1 million, comes as IBM focuses on lowering the price tag for running its storied line of data-crunching workhorses. The z10′s capacity is equivalent to 1,500 servers based on the popular x86 design, IBM says, though it has 85 percent lower energy costs and takes up 85 percent less space than the batch of x86 servers. The new machines also boast more processing horsepower, using 64 processors compared to the 54 processors used in its predecessor the z9..

Solar Balloons from CoolEarth…

CoolEarth is creating & using balloons made of metalized plastic films, half of the balloon is transparent letting the light in to be concentrated into a small high-efficiency solar panel by the concave interior. Each balloon is 2 meters across and depending on the source, estimates vary from 500 watt to 1 kilowatt. They are supported by cables, leaving the ground below clear and limiting environmental impact. It is reported that CoolEarth is planning to build a solar farm in the 10 megawatt range in the next few years. It would use about 10,000 balloons over 80 acres..

20 Megawatt Solar Farm Opens in Spain…

With an installed peak power capacity of 20 megawatts, world’s largest photovoltaic solar power farm has opened in Spain. This farm surpasses the solar farm at the Nellis Air Force Base in Nevada which is rated at 14 megawatts. The new solar farm consists of 120,000 solar panels and covers 100 hectares (247 acres) in Jumilla, a wine-producing region in southern Spain. The farm’s total annual production will be the equivalent of the energy used by 20,000 homes..
